The Studio

Rooted in the Kootenays. Designed for living.

Welcome to House of Rae Design. I’m Trish Vroom, and for me, designing a beautiful space is about more than just selecting the right textures and tones—it’s about understanding the people who live there and the community that surrounds them.

I spent some years away from the Kootenays, but the pull of this valley always meant I would return. This area isn’t just where I work. It is the fabric of who I am.

Long before House of Rae was born, I spent years connecting with the heartbeat of this region. I drove the valley as the Castlegar sales rep for the beloved Pennywise paper. I wrote local profiles for the West Kootenay Go & Do guide. I advocated for community infrastructure like rural broadband and the local hospital foundation. My focus has always been on building up our community.

I know the Kootenays from the ground up. I know the local mom-and-pop shops, the history, and the rugged, quiet beauty of the landscape we call home.

That local connection directly informs how I design. Homes here need to be as functional and resilient as the people who live in them—without sacrificing warmth and style.

The goal is to create rooms that feel like a true reflection of you. Spaces that invite you to kick off your boots, gather with the people you love, and feel completely at home.

Whether you are looking to refresh a single room or redesign your entire home, I bring a local’s eye and a real passion for design to every project. Let’s create something beautiful together.

What We Do
01

Raw Spaces Transformed

Starting with a blank slate? Good — we can do anything. I'll help you design it from the ground up: the layout, the finishes, the warmth. When you walk through the door for the first time, it'll already feel like home.

02

Existing Homes Restyled

Sometimes a home just doesn't feel right — even after years of living in it. I'll help you figure out what's off and fix it: rearranging, replacing, refining until the space finally reflects who you are.

03

Commercial & Hospitality

Designing business spaces that protect your capacity and seating flow while telling your brand's physical story. Specializing in restaurant space planning, acoustic balance, and custom curation.

Questions

What areas do you serve?

Castlegar is home base. I also take on projects in Trail, Nelson and Grand Forks. If you're somewhere else in the West Kootenays, reach out. It depends on the project.

Do I need a full redesign, or can you help with what I already have?

Both. Some clients want a clean start. Others have furniture they love but rooms that don't click. I can work either way. The process just looks different.

How does a consultation work?

We start with a free 30-minute call. No slides, no pitch. Just a real conversation about what's not working and whether I can help. Book through the link below.

What does interior design cost in Castlegar?

It depends on scope. A styling session for an existing room is very different from a full new-build install. The consultation is the right place to talk numbers. I'd rather give you an honest answer once I know what you're working with.

How long does a project take?

Restyling an existing space usually takes a few weeks. New construction or full renovations run longer, typically two to four months from first call to finished room. A lot depends on lead times for furniture and materials.
